The Canadian community of Cape Dorset with about 1200 people, is located on Dorset Island, just off the coast of the Foxe Peninsula in the southwest corner of Baffin Island.
It was at Cape Dorset, where the remains of an ancient Inuit people, who flourished between 1000 B.C. and 1100 A.D., were found. Dorset is named for the Dorset people, who lived here before the Thule, who lived here before the Inuit.
Visitors to Cape Dorset like the summer and winter weather, the beautiful soap stone carvings, hunting, fishing, sliding, berry-picking, visiting, skating on Dead Dog Lake, and snowmobiling in the spring.
