Dig up the past in historic Nordegg

(Education, Galleries/ Exhibits/Shows, Museum, Parks)
The Nordegg Historical Society; Brazeau Collieries Industrial Mine Site and Nordegg Heritage Museum.

The Brazeau Collieries Coal Mine is a designated national and provincial historic site in the central Alberta foothills.
The Heritage Centre, located in the old school building, is open from May long weekend to September long weekend from 9-5. It houses the heritage museum, miners cafe and a gift shop. Tours of the historic mine site can be booked and additional information about the site and area obtained at the visitor information desk in the museum.
Mine tours are conducted (about 2 ½ hours - weather permitting, $ 10 per adult) from May long weekend until the end of August daily at 1 pm and continue to be run until mid September on weekends only. In July and August there is usually a shorter tour offered daily at 10 am. The tours are all above ground and your guide will provide an insight into the history of the mine and area while touring the many well preserved structures on site.

During its hey day the mine was the most productive briquette producing plant in North America, supporting a thriving community of up to 3’000 in a modern and well planned mining town. Today, only a few buildings of the old town remain, including one of its churches. However, the processing facility of the mine, which was rebuilt in the early 50’s after a major fire, is still largely intact and worth a visit.
